Authentic Antique Bisque Dolls - How Do You Tell?

The antique bisque dolls that are most popular among collectors are those made in France and Germany during the late 1800’s. These are of very high quality and detail. Sadly, as the popularity of these toys grew in the commercial markets of the time, many cheap imitations were introduced. If you’re thinking of entering the world of doll collecting, it’s important that you be able to tell the genuine article from the knock-offs.

One of the biggest tell-tale signs of an inauthentic doll is the quality of the porcelain used to form the head. A real bisque doll will be smooth, without blemishes, “pimples”, holes, or dark spots on its surface. Also, high quality bisque should be slightly translucent, giving it that “real skin” quality that made the dolls so popular to begin with.

The next thing to look at on your doll is the painted face itself. What you want to see, ideally, is a very high level of detail. Each feature should be clearly defined. The paint around the eyes (eyelashes and eyebrows) should show small details that you might not find on a less expensive piece. The lips should be well defined and accented, and the cheeks should have just a slight blush to them.

Don’t despair if your doll doesn’t have the most detailed paint or a perfect complexion. Age and use can cause some deterioration, and even a less popular model can find a place in your heart and your collection. Try and keep an eye out for the real thing, though, as you’ll tend to get more out of them, whatever your reason is for collecting these wonderful toys.

I have several bisque dolls left by my mother (born in 1907). They are in their original boxes and have all the details that you describe as what to look for. They are all marked on the back as made in Germany, are in very good condition. They were left in a trunk for many years. Would like to find out if they have any value. If you can help me, please contact me at above e-mail address. Thank you. B. Holder
